The
Chapter & Verse
Bookshop, an affiliate
of Amazon.com, is run by
R. W. Mann, who resides in
the Finger Lakes Region of New York
State, called "Fairyland" by an Early
French Explorer, birthplace of the Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the
Women's Rights movement, Hiawatha,
John D. Rockefeller, Eleanor Roosevelt,
and many book readers, wits, eccentrics,
people who know the value of money, fully
functioning octagenarians, notable inventors,
chemists, entrepreneurs, writers, actors, and a
few famous murderers and mad bombers. Locale of
Theodore Dreiser's An American Tragedy.
Reputed home of many descendants of John
Brown -- don't ask people named "Brown" about
this. Henry Harris Jessup, one of the Presbyterian
founders of the great American University in Beirut,
hailed from the village of Homer. Noted for very long
and severe winters, sudden changes in temperature,
spectacular electrical storms (!), sudden floods, dairy
farms, maple syrup, apple cider, butternut squash,
chablis, rabbits, woodchucks, coyotes, crows,
sedimentary rock, mastodon fossils, the
Cardiff Giant, skiing, golfing, trout fishing,
daffodils and tulips, continuous green
lawns, large dogs, sinus attacks, and
spectacular fall foliage. "The Community,"
one of the world's finest restaurants, is located
on Main Street in Cortland, as is The Cortland
Standard,
one of the last remaining independent
newspapers in the state and the nation. The Book Barn
of the Finger Lakes, home of 100,000 used, rare, and
scholarly books, is located at 198 North Road in Dryden.
The place names here are confusing, with scattered towns
and counties sharing the same name. This is perhaps intended
to confuse foreign invaders. Lillian Pawelczak highly
recommends the ice cream stand in the old caboose in Groton,
where I don't go, on account of the speed trap. Visitors to
the region are advised to avoid jocular coping humor
and informal modes of address.

The characters in the film
"Nobody's Fool" (1994), set in a
country town in Upstate New York,
would not be unfamiliar around here.
